A Jerusalem mix and match

Tonight I went to a women’s only open mic night in a little club tucked into Jerusalem’s First Station. The evening was sponsored by Spotlight on Women. Among the acts was an ordinary-looking religious woman who quoted Rebbe Nachman before blowing my face off with a rendition of an Alicia Keys song. There were songs about geula (redemption) played by mother and daughter violinists and another geula song sung in reggae style. And there was a version of the famous prayer Ein Kelokaynu with Ella Fitzgerald-worthy scatting. The evening ended with a solo of V’he She’Amda that sounded like what I sound like when I sing in my dreams.
