Laura Ben-David is a writer, photographer, marketing consultant and Israel activist. Originally from New York, she made Aliyah from Boca Raton, Florida in 2002. Laura is the author of the book, MOVING UP: An Aliyah Journal, a memoir of her move to Israel, as well as numerous published articles both in print and digital media; her subjects of choice include Israel, Aliyah & social media - and sometimes all three at once.

Splashing together

Just outside the Old City of Jerusalem is the delightful Teddy Park.

This free attraction comes to life in the summer on a regular schedule that has children of all ages – and some adults too – ready and waiting for it to start each time. What struck me was how it was a total mix of Jews and Arabs, religious and secular, all enjoying the fountains together. No one cared who was who, everyone was just having fun, cooling off on a hot summer night in Israel. A pure, happy Israeli moment. So beautiful!

From China to the Western Wall

The emotional moment as a young Kaifeng Jew from China approaches the Western Wall in Jerusalem, right after being brought on aliyah (immigration) to Israel by Shavei Israel. The Kaifeng Jewish population was established by Jewish merchants from the Middle East and Persia as early as the 7th century and once numbered as many as 5,000.

From war to light

One of those photos that I can’t even believe I took…

It was an incredible moment to capture. Photographed during a Chanukah candle-lighting ceremony on an army base on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The menorah was made out of the remains of Hamas rockets that exploded in Israel, and were turned into a beautiful work of art. The blessings were made by an IDF officer, and the little wicks were lit while dozens of soldiers stood at attention.

And there, in the crystal clear glass of the oil cups, is the inverted reflection of all of those soldiers…
